Last weekend I had the honor of performing “Jealous of the Angels” at a funeral for the first time. The funeral was for a fifteen year old girl, who will remain nameless for the privacy of her family. As I opened the service with my song I heard the deepest sounds of sorrow coming from this young girl’s family and friends. So much pain felt and expressed without a single word. It broke my heart.
I stepped away from the keyboard and listened to the pastor say, “God is good, all the time, and all the time God is good.”
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one struggling to find the good in this situation. Puzzled as to why this beautiful fifteen year old’s time had been cut short. While friends and family continued to share stories and pictures of all the beautiful moments they spent with this girl more confusion set in. However, as the pastor continued to share her story and her love for Jesus and the people around her I began seeing a glimmer of hope in such a sad situation.
This girl was in a much better place, and the focus became more about this wonderful place and the wonderful love she was experiencing than the sorrow and pain her loved ones would face without her.
At the end of the service the pastor did an altar call and gave the friends and family of this girl the opportunity to give their lives to Chris. 100 people committed or recommitted their lives to him that day.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28
